Louisa's Walk

While in Hobart we participated in a living history experience dedicated to the women who came to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania)  as prisoners.  Two actors played the parts of Louisa, a woman sent to prison in London for stealing a loaf of bread and forced to leave her children alone while she completed her prison sentence of seven years in Tasmania.  Another actor played many parts as they told Louisa's story.

They told us Louisa's story and we walked with them as they took us on her journey by ship and then to the prison, the Female Factory.

This portrays a quilt that the women on the ship, Rajah, quilted on their way over to Australia from London.

We thought this was excellent.  It really brought history to life as we learned about what the women prisoners went through.
 Hobart.
